Smoothie Saturday: Caribbean Sea Tropical Blue Smoothie Bowl

Caribbean Sea Tropical Blue Smoothie Bowl

The first time I heard about this kind of smoothie I was SHOCKED to see that it actually was the bright, Crayola-cerulean blue advertised on the menu. Since then, I have loved making it for friends and family. It’s really tasty and the bright color brings a special wow factor. Spirulina also packs a serious nutritional punch. It’s a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. It may also lower bad LDL cholesterol. Thanks to its high nutrient content, spirulina has been described as, “the single most nutritious food on the planet.”1 How about that for your breakfast smoothie?

Spirulina Tablets and Powder

The Recipe

To Blend:

  • 1/2 banana (frozen)
  • 1/3 cup mango (frozen)
  • 1/3 cup pineapple (frozen)
  • 1/2 kiwi
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 cup Fage 0% greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp blue spirulina powder

To Top:

  • 1/2 banana, sliced
  • 1 tsp shredded coconut
  • 1/2 kiwi
  • 1/4 cup blueberries

Blend the blendables and top with toppings. Experiment with the color by modulating the amount of spirulina powder. Add more for something closer to cobalt and less for a pale sky blue.
